The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate. Read more By providing scholarships to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics and engineering, the Goldwater Foundation is helping ensure that the U.S. is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the Nation needs in these critical fields. Over its 30-year history, Goldwater Scholarships have been awarded to thousands of undergraduates, many of whom have gone on to win other prestigious awards like the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship, Rhodes Scholarship, Churchill Scholarship and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship that support our Scholars’ graduate school work. Today, Goldwater alumni can be found conducting research that is helping defend the Nation, finding cures for catastrophic diseases and teaching future generations of scientists, mathematicians and engineers. $50,000 grant received from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. I am pleased to announce the first National Goldwater Summit. Thanks to a generous $50,000 grant from the Gordon and Betty Moor Foundation, approximately 50 Goldwater awardees (Scholarship and those receiving Honorable Mentions) will be able to participate in the Summit. The Summit is being held in conjunction with NCUR 2020 at Montana State University from March 26-28, 2020. The Summit’s primary objective is to continue to build a community among those undergraduates who have been recognized by the Goldwater Foundation as this Nation’s next generation of scientific, engineering and mathematics leaders. This community was first brought together virtually via Slack and will now be brought together physically at the Summit. Participants will have the opportunity to plan the future of the Goldwater Scholars Community while building a support network of Goldwater students from across the nation. Summit activities, which include planning sessions, receptions and dinners, are being scheduled to allow participants to take full advantage of the NCUR 2020 conference. Goldwater Scholars interested in participating in the Goldwater Summit who are not already presenting at the conference should contact Dr. John Mateja, President of the Goldwater Scholarship Foundation at goldwaterpres@goldwaterscholarship.gov by February 3, 2020.
